Royal Netherlands Navy: 3D Simulator

The Challenge
The Royal Netherlands Navy wants to connect with a new generation of potential naval recruits.
The Project
Incredible Sims™ has been selected to develop a PC game for the Royal Netherlands Navy.
The Solution
This advanced simulation will use video game techniques to enable the general public to experience life aboard an operational warship. Incredible Sims™ will recreate most of the frigate De Ruyter in a 3D game world, allowing the user to interact with the crew and complete a series of wide-ranging missions. Challenges include target practice with 20mm side guns, landing a helicopter on deck and venting smoke after an engine room fire.
Building on the success of SubSafe, an advanced 3D simulation of a Royal Navy Trafalgar class submarine, Incredible Sims™ will bring their experience in game design and creating realistic 3D worlds to this new and exciting project.
RNLN comment: “This application gives a view of the working and living quarters of a navy frigate and it provides a fun environment where you can learn all about the different jobs on a navy vessel. It will give potential seafarers the opportunity to experience “real” life on board a frigate and ensures they will be better informed when they apply for a job in the navy. We chose Incredible Sims™ after seeing a demonstration of SubSafe. With SubSafe they showed they can approach reality in a virtual environment while making it fun and interactive too.”

About Royal Netherlands Navy
The Royal Netherlands Navy contributes in guaranteeing the freedom of the seas and works on a daily basis to guard peace and security in the Netherlands and abroad. It defends national interests and contributes to the worldwide expeditionary capability of the Netherlands’ Armed Forces. The sea provides the Navy with the means to get close to a crisis or disaster zone at any time or place, without infringing the territorial integrity of other countries and without the need for a land base.
All Navy personnel have the ability to respond flexibly and can be deployed quickly in any situation, thanks to their sound education, intensive training and modern equipment. To ensure the Royal Netherlands Navy can perform its duties, every year about 1400 new recruits are required. The Royal Netherlands Navy Recruitment Office is responsible for recruitment.

Airport Emergency Response
The Incredible Sims Toolkit™ has been used to create an Airport Emergency Response simulator.
You are commissioned to assist in the evacuation of crew and passengers, using mobile vehicles and watercraft. This demonstrator is based on real-world aviation traffic and runway layouts at Bristol International Airport (UK).
Various scenarios have been re-enacted, including fire fighting at a Boeing 737-700 crash scene.

Nokia Creebies
Incredible Box™ developed for Nokia the Series 40 version of Creebies – a virtual pet game that gives each player their own pet to care for, entertain, feed and even breed! Creebies will be available through the N-Gage mobile games service early in 2008.
Incredible Box™ was head-hunted by Gameware Development to produce the Series 40 version of Nokia’s flagship virtual pet game.

Ogre Loves SubSafe
The Ogre 3D engine community celebrates SubSafe on their prestigious Featured Projects web-page.
Created for use by the Royal Navy, SubSafe is an advanced 3D Trafalgar class submarine simulator, which uses cutting-edge video game technology to train personnel. This type of simulator is commonly known as Serious Gaming (see Wikipedia Serious Gaming article).
Incredible Box™ uses the Incredible Sims Toolkit™ to develop all of its 3D serious games. The underlying 3D rendering of the Incredible Sims Toolkit™ is the Ogre 3D engine. Ogre (Object-Oriented Graphics Rendering Engine) is a flexible and extremely powerful open-source 3D engine.
SubSafe - 3D Simulator
Incredible Box™ has completed the first phase of the Royal Navy’s SubSafe, a Serious Gaming initiative with partners HFIDTC and Aerosystems International.
SubSafe was built using Incredible Sims Toolkit™, the easy-to-use PC application that allows you to navigate around 3D environments.
The SubSafe project evolved following a request to the HFI DTC from the Submarine Integrated Project Team (IPT) at DE&S, Abbey Wood, to coordinate a new SMQ[D] study in which a comprehensive interactive computer model of an SSN submarine would be constructed. Professor Bob Stone, a prominent advocate for the benefits of using computer games for training purposes, approached Incredible Box™ to produce SubSafe, a Serious Game solution to support his studies.
